What is microneedling?

Microneedling – aka “collagen induction therapy” – is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment offered at Skin by Cedar Avery that promotes natural collagen production for smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. Using a device equipped with ultra-fine needles, microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and create new collagen and elastin. Collagen give skin its firmness while elastin gives skin its elasticity. When we’re young, collagen and elastin are abundant, giving us skin that’s baby smooth and bouncy. As we age these proteins become damaged and our body has a harder time reproducing them. This creates wrinkles, fine lines, uneven texture, larger pores, sagging and crepey skin. Injuries to the skin, acne, and sun damage can create further damage to collagen and elastin and age the skin even faster. Microneedling reverses this damage and prevents further signs of aging by stimulating new production of collagen and elastin, all with very little downtime and minimal discomfort. Microneedling effectively reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Safe for all skin types, microneedling is a popular choice for clients seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation.
FAq’s
Does it hurt?
Because we numb the skin, microneedling is fairly comfortable! Most clients describe the sensation as an electric toothbrush moving across the skin. For sensitive clients numbing may be left on the skin longer.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on your skin’s condition and your skin concerns, which will be discussed in the consult.
Initial treatments are typically done in a series of 3, 4-6 weeks apart, with more treatments recommended for deeper wrinkles and scarring.
As maintenance and preventative aging, treatments are recommended 4 times a year, 3 months apart.
How often should I get microneedling done?
Initial series: 4-6 weeks apart
Maintenance and preventative aging: 3-4 months apart
What’s the downtime?
Most clients experience light redness resembling a sunburn for about 24-48 hours. During this period you will not be able to apply makeup and will need to keep the area free of sweat and bacteria.
After the redness subsides, you may experience dryness and flaking for about 3-5 days on average. During this period you may wear makeup but should still avoid harsh skincare (retinol, exfoliants, fragrance, dyes).
Can I just microneedle at home?
At home devices don’t deliver the same results as medical microneedling. This is because the needles are unable to penetrate to the proper depth in the skin. Home devices will not build collagen or treat: wrinkles, fine lines, large pores, uneven pigment, scarring, stretch marks, etc.
These devices may also cause damage to the skin due to lack of safety features, cheap material, user error, and difficulty with proper sanitation.
What should I avoid?
- Any skincare not recommended by your provider before and after microneedling
- Sweating, bacteria, touching the area
- Excessive sun exposure or heat
- Sunscreen for 12 hours
- Makeup for 24-48 hours
Full aftercare protocol listed above
When will I see results?
Full results will take up to 90 days after your treatment. You may start to notice improvement after 1-2 months.
What will my skin look like during and after the treatment?
You will not be bloody or beet red, the skin will experience slight pinpoint bleeding that I wipe off before you leave, and minimal redness. (see these photos during and after treatment)

What to expect with your treatment
Expect to be slightly pink to red for 24-48 hours after your treatment. Your skin may feel and look like it’s been sunburned, but this will start to subside after the 4th hour post treatment. Dryness and very light flaking may occur and typically lasts no more than 5 days after your treatment.
During your treatment you will feel a vibrating sensation from the device. This should be fairly comfortable due to the topical numbing, though certain areas – such as around the eyes or the forehead – may be more sensitive for certain clients. The treatment is roughly an hour long during which we are only actively microneedling for about 15-20 minutes, so any discomfort won’t last long.
Stages of healing

Before

1 hour after

4 hours after

24 hours after
Stage 1:
Inflammation

SkinPen’s microneedles pierce the skin, increasing blood flow. Immune cells work to clean and disinfect the area, setting the stage for repair. This stage helps prepare the skin to rebuild with fresh, healthy cells.
During this stage the skin can look red, dry, or smooth and plump after redness subsides.
Stage 2:
Proliferation

The micro-wounds created by SkinPen multiply new skin cells to replace the damaged ones, while collagen and elastin fibers start to form. This stage builds a fresh foundation of skin tissue, giving it renewed strength and elasticity.
During this stage the skin may look the same as before, as if a treatment had never been done.
Stage 3:
Remodeling

This final stage supports the skin’s natural regeneration process, revealing skin that looks healthier and rejuvenated.
During this stage the skin will start to look smoother and more plump. Fine lines, texture, pigmentation and scarring will start to improve.
How is microneedling performed?
Microneedling is performed only by a licensed professional, using a device with fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface, stimulating a natural wound healing response to build new collagen and elastin.
Step 1: Consultation & Skin Prep
- Skin is assessed for concerns (aging, texture, scars).
- You may be asked to stop retinoids, AHAs, or exfoliants a few days before.
Step 2: Topical Numbing
- A numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes to minimize discomfort.
- Clients with lower pain tolerance may opt to leave the numbing cream on longer. (With proper numbing, microneedling should be relatively painless.)
Step 3: Depth Settings
- Your provider will select the appropriate needle depth in each area for your skin
- Needle depth ranges from 0.25 mm (superficial) to 2.5 mm (deeper scars or wrinkles).
- Depth will be adjusted throughout the treatment to target each area effectively.
Step 4: Microneedling
- SkinPen microneedling device is gently glided across the face in sections (forehead, cheeks, chin, etc.), creating microchannels in the skin.
- Minimal pinpoint bleeding and slight redness occurs
Step 5: Discuss Aftercare
- Skin will appear light pink to red and tight, like a mild sunburn, for 1–3 days. Redness begins to subside 4 hours post your treatment.
- Follow all aftercare guidelines listed under aftercare and discussed with your provider for maximum results and to avoid negative reactions.
Medical microneedling vs. dermarollers or at home Devices
Medical microneedling when done by a professional is safe and effective, delivering strong results. Professional devices penetrate to the proper depth to encourage full skin remodeling, and contain safety features to prevent negative side effects.
At home “microneedling” devices – like dermarollers and stamps – will not be effective at treating skin concerns or building collagen and elastin. They are used only for improving product penetration. They may also cause damage to the skin barrier, scarring, and can even lead to infection if not sterilized properly.
